Life: Finding motivation

Life, Motivation

Looks like I finally found the motivation I needed to start a new career. Sometimes I’m a tad slow but I eventually get there. I’ll keep you guys posted as things continue to develop but as right now things are slowly rolling out.  We’re currently working on a new photo website, developing my portfolio, and setting up all the business aspects of it. The anal retentive person inside me loves working out all the small details this new venture is going to bring on.

Thanks to the hubby for pushing me to finally take the risk and pursue what I really love to do, photography.  I would also like to thank my outrageous BFF for continuously believing in my abilities.

Yep, that’s right as long as I could remember I’ve always had a camera in hand capturing life’s special moments and now it’s time for me to capture yours.  Please stay tuned as I release more details later on this year.
Watch out world I’m about to start my own photography business!! I’m super excited about what the future will bring and can’t wait to begin my transformation as a business owner.

Update: I’ve decided to take things slow to enjoy my baby and also to hone my skills before I take the leap.

Life: Our lovely trip to Maui

Costco, Hawaii, Life, Maui, Travel Packages, Travels, Vacation

Last year when we went to Paris it was my choice so when the hubby suggested we should take a vacation to Hawaii to celebrate our 11th dating anniversary  this year I was delighted.  I told him that I wanted to try a pre-packaged deal to see what they were like.  I decided that the first place I would get information would be from our local AAA office.  After spending an hour speaking with a travel agent I realized that the first thing we needed to do was figure out what Island we wanted to visit.  It never occurred to me how little we knew about Hawaii.  It probably would have been easier to ask our friends for their recommendations but since we don’t like telling anyone our plans before we actually book things it made it harder for us.

One evening the hubby suggested that I take a look at Costco Travel to see what packages they were offering.  After spending some time looking over the brochures I received at AAA and comparing them to the Costco packages I realized that the Costco ones made more sense.  I looked up a few reviews online and people seem to like their Costco vacations.  We decided that Maui would be better suited to fit our needs especially since it was supposed to be super romantical.
I woke up at 6:00am to take a walk along the beach.
Here’s what we got in our Costco package:
  • Flight to Maui from LAX on Delta
  • 5 night stay at the Royal Lahaina in a Deluxe Ocean View Room
  • Free self serve parking at the hotel
  • $200 resort food credit
  • Free daily breakfast
  • 5 day car rental
  • 1 dinner Luau for 2 at the hotel
  • 1 dinner sunset cruise for 2 on the Teralani
We had a lovely time while in Maui and the Costco package was perfect for us.  We took full advantage of everything our package offered.  Every morning we woke up and ate a lovely buffet breakfast before heading out for the day.  In the afternoon we used our resort credit for snacks and to have dinner.  The car we got as our rental was essential when getting around Maui.  Our hotel was simply delightful and we had a breathtaking view of the beach.  The proximity to Black Rock was amazing especially when we decided to try snorkeling. (I crossed number 82 off my list.) Overall we would definitely recommend the Costco Travel package to Maui to all of our friends.
I learned how to hula at the Lua.

One of the coolest thing we got to do while in Maui that wasn’t included in our Costco package was horseback riding. (I finally got to cross number 84 off my list of things to do in 1001 days.)  We decided to go horseback riding with Maui Stables and I’m really happy we experienced it with someone that really knows the land.  Our guides were very entertaining and the trip itself was worth every penny we paid for it.  To get from Lahaina to Hana we had to take the beautiful but very scary Road to Hana. After the ride ended we got a free voucher to get into Haleakala National Park.

The cool horses we got to ride.

Our sunset dinner cruise ended up being a lovely whale watching experience and it was amazing!

We woke up to this everyday. The view from our room.

Maui was beautiful and very romantic.  We had a ton of fun and the weather couldn’t have been better.  We ended up going in late March and early April so we caught the end of the whale migration.  Its incredible sitting down eating breakfast while looking into the ocean and seeing whales pass by.  Two things that we miss from Maui is P.O.G. juice and Hershey’s kisses with macadamia nuts.  We can’t wait to head back to Hawaii one of these days to visit a different island.

Life: On apartment living…

Apartment, Life, Moving, Quick TIps, Southern California

For the past few days I’ve been pondering if I should write this post but since this is a new month I’ve decided why not.  Let me start off by saying I like where we live but I have never really loved it.  We moved into our apartment about 3 and a half years ago.  At that time we decided on this place because it made the most sense for us.  The apartment itself is on the first floor of a nine unit complex, the rent is reasonable for Southern California, and the location is fairly nice.  I spent half of my childhood living an in apartment and the other half in a house.  Can you guess which one I prefer?  That’s right there is nothing like living in a house and having more space.  We don’t have any intentions of purchasing our own house anytime soon since I haven’t found a full time job yet but maybe in the future.  However, we have decided that we need more space and we are were looking for a two bedroom unit.  We need an extra bedroom because the hubby is telecommuting more often and he needs an office.  (Sh! Don’t tell him I need a need a craft room too and it will be used as that when he’s at work.) We are also looking for a place closer to his job because being stuck in traffic isn’t very fun.  (Double yeah for me since the closer we’re to his job the closer I’ll be to my family.)

Fast forward a couple of months since I actually began writing this post right before we moved out.  We have been living in our new apartment for about a month in a half and I’m loving every minute of it.  I miss our old city but I’m really excited about discovering new places.  The things I won’t miss about our old place are living next to an alley, having someone living above us, street sweeping tickets ( I was lucky enough to get one a couple of days before we moved out),  and above all NO more circling around trying to find a parking space.  What I will miss in our old neighborhood are our nightly jogs to the beach, living close to cute shops, and knowing all 9 tents in our building.  The things I love about our new place are all the space we have,  we’re on the top floor, all the amenities, parking, and that I’m closer to my family.

One thing we considered before moving was the price tag that came along with it.  We hired mover which we had never done before but was seriously the BEST decision we’ve made. I loved that in one swoop all our belongings went from one place to another, we didn’t have have to bother our family and friends to help us out and we didn’t have to lug everything up to the second floor ourselves. Overall we’re paying more for our current apartment but the benefits far outweigh the cost.  It’s all about the value for the money folks.  When we were looking for a new place we saw about 15 different units and neighborhoods before we actually decided on where we are living at now.  We never thought we would ever live in a complex that has so many apartments but as of right now we love it.  We never thought we wanted to live somewhere where we had to sign a year lease but right not we love that we are locked in on one single price. If you’re looking for a new place keep your options open and you’ll eventually find something you love.

Apartment living right now is pretty good and if it continues to be this good I won’t mind staying here for a while.  In the mean time if we ever decide to purchase a house I’ll share my thought with you on that subject.

Quick tips for looking for a new apartment:

  1. Make a list of things you’re are looking for in order of importance to you
  2. Keep in mind that rental prices are high right now and tend to go up higher during the summer
  3. Be flexible
  4. Don’t be blinded by the complex itself take time to look around the neighborhood you’ll be living in
  5. Google the complexes you are considering but take the information with a grain of salt
  6. Be openminded
  7. Don’t rush unless you have a deadline to move out
  8. Think about things you’re willing to give up (For example, we gave up the beach in return for a gym in our complex.)
  9. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
  10. Try to visit the complex more than once and at different times
  11. Live within your means. If you fall in love with a place please make sure you can afford it.
  12. Keep in mind that moving is extremely expensive and stressful
  13. Be patient with yourself
  14. Make sure you moving for the right reasons
  15. Please keep in mind no place is going to be perfect but make sure it feels like home
  16. Make sure you read the lease you are signing
  17. Make sure you’re credit score is up to date and everything on it is correct
  18. Don’t let them give you the hard sale meaning that its there job to get a place rented out and they will do anything to get that done. They will call you several times but don’t feel pressured to take a place unless it feels like home to you.
  19. Take a camera and a notebook with you.  Trust me you’ll forget the details after seeing several apartments.
  20. Above all have fun looking for a new place.

Quick tips for moving:

  1. Hire movers. Time is money.  We used Yelp to find ours but you should as your friends if they have hired some.
  2. Be organized and pack early.
  3. Label, label, and keep labeling. This will help you out so much when you’re surrounded by boxes and don’t have an idea where to begin unpacking.
  4. When you’re getting ready to pack have 3 different piles.  One for donations, one to toss and the last one to pack.  This is the time to purge things you don’t want to take with you.
  5. Have fun looking and be excited about your upcoming adventure
Good luck if you’re currently moving in or out!

{Date Night Fridays} The Groundlings

California, Date Night Fridays, Dating, Life, Southern California
The hubby and I love to L.O.L. and we are always on the lookout to find more places to do this. One of our favorite places to go when we need a little brightening up or when we just want to laugh until our stomach hurts is the Groundlings. If you love SNL style comedy and its comedians then you’ll love this place. We have gone several times throughout our 11 years of dating and every time we have been there we come out laughing. The venue is very intimate and you’ll feel like your part of the show. At times you are asked to yell out things for their improve section.  Don’t worry this place isn’t the kind that embarrasses you or has stand up comedians. They usually incorporate current events and on occasions some of their alumni show up and make special appearances. If you loved movies like Bridesmaids and actors like Will Ferrell you’ll love this place.

Prices vary throughout the year but usually go for less than $20. Follow them on Facebook or Twitter and you might be able to score some free tickets. I’ve won free tickets on a few occasions and you guys know how much I love free stuff. If you don’t believe me that this place is pretty awesome check out their Yelp reviews.

Please keep in mind that I’m not being paid or compensated for recommending this venue. This is just my personal experience and if you have a blast like we have spread the word.

For my romantics out there: Nothing says love like being able to laugh with your loved one.

Giving Back: Why I’ve decided to be a bone marrow donor?

Bone Marrow, Donating, Donor, giving back, Life, Love

One day as I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed I came upon THIS link that one of my friends  had posted. After clicking on the link and watching the heartfelt video I broke down crying and once I composed myself I began thinking about how horrible it would be if I was in the same position. I would hate to find out that someone in my family or one of my friends had only 2 months to live and they could be saved if we were able to find a donor. This seriously woke me up and I realized that although I might not be the perfect match for Janet Liang I might be a match for someone else’s child, friend, family member, or loved one. My parents have ingrained in me their motto which is, “Haz el bien sin ver a quien” roughly translated to “Do good without seeing to whom.”

Right after watching the video I headed out to a local drive that I found through Be the Match but unfortunately the drive ended before I was able to get there. I ended up ordering a kit from Be the Match which I received about two weeks later and today I will be sending it off. Both my parents and the hubby have their reservations about me become a donor but when I began to explain to them why I was doing it they felt more at ease.

The kit comes with great instructions and it is very easy to use.  All you have to do is swab the inside of your cheek four times and send it back.  It takes about two months to process everything and that’s it.  Once you have registered you will be in a system and if they ever find a match they will call you up.

I’ve decided to share this story with all of you guys since I believe that the more people hear about it the more people might actually go register. I believe we are all connected to each other and we need to stop being so selfish. If you can’t or don’t want to go register then share this with everyone you know someone might be touched enough to go do the same thing.

Update 4/2/12

I got an email a couple of weeks ago saying they finally received my kit.  It will take about a couple of months to put me in the system.

{Date Night Fridays} I’m still dating my husband

California, Date Night Fridays, Dates, Life, Romance, Southern California

…and loving every minute of it.  Just because you get married doesn’t mean you should stop going on dates.  When the hubby and I were dating our date night was usually on Friday night and it was involved doing something different that we hadn’t done before.  Fast forward to almost 11 years later and we are still committed to going on dates.  On this segment called Date Night Fridays I’m going to give you suggestions on where to go on dates in Southern California.  I’m aware I’ll probably hate myself later if you all start showing up to my favorite spots but I’m willing to take that risk.  Southern California is full of museums, botanical gardens, comedy clubs, and other places that could be quite romantical.  Please keep in mind that many places the hubby and I go to are very affordable which is a bonus for us. We actually try to outdo ourselves with planning the “cheapest” date.

One of our favorite FREE museums to visit is the California Science Center.
When I was little my parents used to take me there and I later found out that my hubby’s parents used to do the same thing.  (I wonder if we were ever there at the same time.)  The museum is pretty big and there are a lot of things to do.  They have a small aquarium where you can touch some of the star fish at.  Sometimes they have very cool exhibits but they are usually cost extra. We love going in there and playing with all the things and sometime catching a film in their huge IMAX theater.  Parking is usually about $10 bucks but if you’re feeling a tad adventurous or if you’re trying to go green you might want to take the Metro.  This place is totally kid friendly but it can also be enjoyed with just your significant other.  We’ve taken our little goddaughter with us on several occasions and she has a blast.
If you want to romance your special loved one pack a picnic basket and enjoy it in the adjacent Rose Garden. (Keep in mind that it’s closed from January 1st to March 15th.)

Where is your favorite place to go on a date?

Life: Happy Valentine’s Day

Holidays, Life, Love
I hope everyone had a lovely Valentine’s day and now here are my thoughts on this holiday.  I’ve always had a love for holidays but Valentine’s has always had a special place in my heart.  When I was growing up my mom used to make a big deal about it and I loved every minute of it.  I loved going to the store and picking out cards to pass out to my classmates.  I loved seeing hearts all over the place not to mention the crazy amount of pink all around.  As the years have gone by I’ve realized that love should be celebrated all year long not just one day a year.

I’m fortunate enough to have married someone that makes me feel loved all year long and not just on Valentine’s day.  I’m truly blessed because my hubby and my mom tell me they love me on a daily basis and I know that there are people out there who are not as fortunate as I am.  I’ve had a lot of death in my family and I believe that you should tell people how you feel every chance you get.  If you’re reading this and you haven’t told someone you love them today please do so now.  Remember that life is precious and you might not get another opportunity to tell someone you love them.  If on the other hand you are someone that hasn’t heard those words in a long time please know that this stranger sends you her love. I love you guys and without you I would not have anyone to blog my stories to.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
