Our trip to the Dollar Tree Store…

Wedding

This past weekend my FI and I went on an outing to the Dollar Tree store in search of more bargains for our wedding. We went with an open mind and to my surprise we found something we actually needed…bubbles!!!!

Yes, that’s right I said “Bubbles” we wanted an alternative for rice or rose pedals to be thrown on us when we exit the church and we decided this would be the best. What can I say we are children at heart. I cannot take the credit for the bubble idea since it was actually my FI who mentioned it since he saw it in a wedding photograph online. Since I love bubbles I immediately agreed with the idea. The only thing is that we did not want to pay a lot for the bubbles and this is where our trip came in handy. We found a pack of 12 for only $1!!! That’s right we bought 6 packs for $5 and since they are plain I plan on putting a ribbon on them to make them pretty. I’ll post pictures when I actually start decorating them until then these are other things we saw in the wedding aisle…

We also bought 2 heart shaped vases to use in our candy buffet which I will share with you later. Don’t worry if you do not have a Dollar Tree Store near you, you can also order online!! Yep the economy might be bad but you can still splurge at the Dollar Tree Store for bubbles!!

FYI: Catholic Ceremony

Catholic Wedding, Engagement, Engagement Encounter, Wedding

These are a few of the things I have learned in planning for a traditional Catholic ceremony.

First you need to make an appointment with your parish to speak with the priest about your intent of getting married at least six months ahead of our ideal wedding date.
(It took me a month to get a priest in my area to meet with us. I had to go to the parish were I was registered at instead of my local parish because the priest would not return my calls. This is why I say at least six months in advance.)

When you finally have an appointment and meet with the priest be prepared to talk about everything. I really mean everything including if you live together, how you meet, what your goals are, and overall what kind of relationship both of you guys have. Once he gets that out of the way then you can talk about the date and the details like what time of day you would like to have it at. In my p
arish they offer the option of some Friday night masses but weddings are mainly held on Saturdays between 9:00am and 2:00pm. This is where you might have to be flexible especially if the time you are looking for is already booked.

Before departing your meeting with the priest he will hand you a substantial amount of paperwork you have to fill out and return before anything is processed.

Another thing you have to do is go to a Catholic Engagement Encounter (CEE). They gave us three choices of ways we could fulfill the engagement encounter hours but we opted to go for a weekend away to Santa Barbara. Once again here be prepared to discuss everything but this time with your fiance. Topics range from finances, children, retirement, religious beliefs, ideals, values, sex, and morals. This weekend is just about you and your fiance and making sure you are ready for the commitment of marriage.

These are a few pictures of our CEE in Santa Barbra:

FYI: If you go for the retreat option you should know that you will be separated from your FI and the rooms are usually dorm style. Oh and if you cannot afford the $250 that they charge per couple you can ask your priest to give you a fee waiver.

Now that we have completed the Encounter we can move on to turning in all the paperwork that has to be in place before being able to walk down the alter.

We need to turn in:
Recent copy of baptismal certificate
Copy of first communion certificate
Engagement Encounter certificate
2 for each pre-nuptial forms which are filed out usually by your parents
Booklet of reading that will be read in the ceremony

Note: According to our parish priest you do not need to have done your confirmation in order to get married.

Oh and we have not even discussed the fees that you have to pay in order to get married in the church.

We need to pay:
Parish wedding planner $$$
Use of Parish $$$
Alter servers (2) $$
Music directer $$$
Cantor $$$
This all together totals a little less than 1k. This does not include the priest donation or what you have to pay for the engagement encounter.

My search for the perfect wedding band!!

Rings, Wedding, Wedding Bands

Kevin Jewelers
We already bought my fiance’s wedding band back in January. Since he is a no nonsense kind of guy he opted for a sturdy but very budget friendly Tungsten Band from Kevin Jewelers.

Jared
I on the other hand since I have more expensive taste and I want both my engagement ring to and my band to match I have opted for platinum. I completely love this wedding band from Jared’s but in platinum it makes it out of my price range.

Costco
This ring from Costco is more in my price range unfortunately I found out today that their ladies rings only come in size 7. (FYI: There men ring’s come only in size 10.) I know what some of you might be thinking about my attempt at getting a ring at Costco. I mean when you think about wedding rings who would think about Costco but the way I look at is that they have great customer service and reasonable prices.

Blue Nile
This is another ring that is my price range and is also in the metal I want. My fiance purchased my engagement ring from Blue Nile and I absolutely love it. They have amazing customer service and a wide selection for reasonable prices.

I will keep you posted on what ring I decide to go with once I figure it out.

My first blog and the wedding is getting closer!

First Blog Post, Wedding

As of today I have 126 more days until my wedding. This week I have spend countless hours looking at different site trying to figure out how to combine my sense of taste to other brides. I believe I have expensive taste but I am confined to a mid-size budget. My fiance and I are attempting not to lose track of what will happen beyond the wedding. I mean since we are paying for everything ourselves (well for about 99% of it) we cannot lose sight of our grandeur goal in life which is to have a good retirement. Therefore, our wedding is a combination of my “expensive” taste and having to keep a budget in mind. I hope you join me on my way to the alter.
