I’ve been a patriot ever since the first time I memorized the Pledge of Allegiance. I proudly recited it every single time we passed a flag and I still do. I admired people like Abraham Lincoln and I even used to carry a pocket size US Constitution with me at all time. I used to find ways to justify the atrocities this nation has done. (My maternal great grandparents were affected by the repatriation of the 1930s.) I was among the minority of individuals in my age group to vote. The best thing about turning 18 was voting. I got in arguments with my friends and coworkers telling them about the importance of voting. I was very close in joining the military but I was too much of a coward to follow through. I mean who majors in Political Science with an emphasis in American Government without loving this county. I love being an American! I’m telling you all this because my heart is broken. What we’re doing to these children is not American. What we’re doing to these children is unforgivable. It weights heavily on my head what I will tell my daughter when she’s older and she learns about this period in our lives. We need to set our political difference aside more than ever. We need to come together as humans. So, my friends please do your part. Set aside the fact that these children are immigrants that’s for another discussion. Vote! Donate! Call your representatives. Spread the message.
