Life: A Hello Kitty Baby Shower (dessert table)

A few months ago my half-sister approached me and asked me to help her with her son and daughter-in-law’s baby shower. If you have been following my blog you know that she had me by the time she announced that it would be a pink Hello Kitty baby shower. I helped her out by doing the dessert table for her.

Sweets and LIfe: Hello Kitty Baby Shower (dessert table)

I began a baking a week before the baby shower because I’ve learned from previous parties that sugar cookies work better with royal icing when they are completely dry.  I used Sugarbelle’s recipe for sugar cookies because I’ve always had good results with it.

Once completely dried I placed the cookies in cellophane bags and I added pink ribbon that I already had.

I worked on the Hello Kitty cake the day of the baby shower. I baked a Hershey’s chocolate cake and frosted it with a buttercream frosting.  I use the Hello Kitty cake pan mold and I loved how the cake turned out.

My mom loves chocolate covered pretzels so I had to include those in the dessert table.  I purchased the pink baskets at the Dollar Tree and the Hello Kitty in front of the baskets are actually stickers placed over cardstock.

Another must have item in any dessert table are chocolate covered Oreos which I love.

I made the same type of sign I did for my daughter’s 1st birthday dessert table.

The sign says:

The dessert table will be open after Dinner!

Please use the tongs, chose what you like!

Leave some for others, Please be polite!

Here’s the final dessert table.  I baked brownies, cake pops, cake balls, brownie bites, and cupcakes. I used Billy Vanilla, Vanilla recipe for half of the cupcakes.  My niece and sister decorated the background.

Last weekend we celebrated our little goddaughter’s 7th birthday.  She had never had a party and we couldn’t be happier to be able to do it for her.  We decided early on to make it a surprise party and we didn’t tell anyone in the Hubby’s side of the family.  We were hoping to have a beautiful sunny Southern California day but unfortunately it was extremely cold.  It was so cold I had to bring out blankets for everyone to use.  I know that if my family from Kansas is reading this they will laugh at us but give me a break 50 °F is cold to us.   If you follow me on Twitter or on Instagram you know that I got a cold the day after Thanksgiving.  I wasn’t planning on getting sick and as a result I didn’t have time to finish up some projects I had planned to do.  Without further ado here’s the small party we had for our little goddaughter.

Baking Inspiration: Disney/Pixar Toy Story Cakes

Baking Inspiration, cake, Disney, Pixar, Sweets, Toy Story

The hubby and I were watching The Pixar Story on Netflix the other night and I began to thinker with the idea of making another Pixar inspired cake like the one I did here.  One of my favorite movies from the Disney/Pixar collaboration is Toy Story. Just in case you were wondering I love all of three movies equally.  I don't have plans on making a cake any time soon since its so hot right now but how cool would it be to make one for a little boy or girl.

Here's the list I came up with so far…

My attempt at a Disney/Pixar Car’s Cake

Baking, Buttercream, cake, Cars, Disney, Sweets
Without further ado here is my first attempt at a themed cake.  I am really pleased with how it turned out and more importantly the birthday boy loved it.  I completely forgot to take a better photo of the cake once it was assembled since I was rushing to make cupcakes right before we left.  Next time I'll take the time to put more effort into my photos.

Brown Sugar Pound Cake…(Cake 2)

Baking, cake, Sweets
So I’m sure you realize that its the 2nd pound cake that I made.  When I made this cake my hubby exclaimed this is the best cake you’ve ever made and I just smiled.  This cake I decided to make this cake for my hubby and his co-workers.  I knew it was going to be a stressful week for them and since I try to bake for them something at least once every two months I figured it was about that time.
Things new to me:
shortening
What I learned from this recipe:
Making Cream Cheese frosting is not that difficult
My oven temperature is on target
My mom has cooked or more liked baked with shortening but since I hadn’t done that before I’ll stick it under things new to me.

Since I had previously learned that being patient is a good thing when baking I put my new skill to the test.  Since I began my little adventure I haven’t opened the oven once but I did set the timer for a shorter amount of time for some reason I thought it was faster.  This cake was a tad underdone but I’m glad that I now know the truth about my oven.

I made the Cream Cheese Frosting Melissa (okay so we are not on a first name basis but since I figure I’ll probably never meet her its cool) and I’m glad I did because it was delicious. It gave the pound cake a little something it needed.
So what did my hubby’s co-workers think about this pound cake? Well, let’s just say that people who normally don’t have meeting around his desk were doing it that day. I personally didn’t think it was as amazing as my hubby thought but maybe that’s because I’m not really into brown sugar and he is.

Let them have cake…?

cake, Wedding

We have decided to go the unconventional route of not having a cake for our wedding although I do not know how most our guest are going to react to this. Since I love sweets it does not make sense not to have cake but we have opted for cheesecake instead. If we were to have cake though these cakes would be what we would be looking for.
